GUYS AND DOLLS

In 2007 Darius took on the role of Sky Masterson in the Donmar Warehouse production of Guys And Dolls. The acclaimed production of Frank Loesser's musical went on tour across the UK and was given a new lease of life by director Michael Grandage.

Suave, smart, handsome. Sky Masterson is a high-stakes gambler whose luck never seems to run out, and a wild card who surprises himself when he falls in love with missionary Sarah Brown.
During the show Sky sings the songs "I'll Know", "My Time Of Day", "I've Never Been in Love Before" and the classic "Luck Be A Lady".

Darius made his debut in the role on 1st May 2007 at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and performed his last show at The Grand Theatre and Opera House in Leeds on 7th July 2007.

The full tour dates that Darius appeared on were:
1st May - 12th May, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton * 15th May - 26th May, New Theatre, Oxford * 29th May - 9th June,  Liverpool Empire Theatre, Liverpool * 12th June - 23rd June, The Playhouse, Edinburgh * 26th June - 7th July The Grand Theatre and Opera House, Leeds.

Darius spoke about appearing in the show to the Liverpool Daily Post during rehearsals in an article published in May 2007:
“The dancing has been the biggest challenge – I’m learning lots of new moves that I never knew were in me. Surprisingly, my profession as a performer has never included 1940s dancing so that’s been a wonderful new hurdle to conquer,” he laughed
"I think, as an actor, you have to find those attributes you can most identify with within the character you are playing,
For me, its Sky’s fearlessness and his sense of adventure – these are things that my parents would say about me.”

Darius also spoke to the MerseyMart to talk about following some famous footsteps in the role and said:
"I saw Ewan McGregor play Sky about 18 months ago when he was getting a bit disillusioned with the whole Hollywood thing and he was amazing. It was hugely flattering when they showed interest in me playing him. I wasn't able to at first as I was busy recording in LA. It's a big honour to be playing this role with such a history of great actors who have filled the shoes, but I have decided I won't let that overwhelm me."

And talking to the Daily Record he explained:
"I am in rehearsals for Guys And Dolls at the moment and loving it because the stakes are so high.
"The dancing is incredibly full on. In fact the whole show is like a rollercoaster ride of new acting theory, new choreography and all kinds of things I have never done before.
"It is a real challenge to me as a performer and there is definitely no room for mistakes because some of the moves are so difficult they have to be done perfectly.
"But it never feels like work because it is always so exciting and so much fun."

He added: "I was very lucky to see Ewan McGregor perform twice in Guys And Dolls and he filled the role with such incredible energy and such a definable character that I was filled with enthusiasm.
"I felt inspired as a performer which I then took back to Chicago with me. But I also thought I would love to have a go at playing Sky and now I am and it's a huge honour.
"It is such a riotous cocktail of acting, singing and dancing challenges it must be one of the most exciting roles a performer can tackle."

It all begins with a bet. Nathan Detroit bets high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson that Sky cannot persuade Save-A-Soul Missionary Sister Sarah Brown to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. While the worldly Sky works his charms on a wary Sarah, Nathan is doing his best to stay outside the matrimonial clutches of his long-suffering fiancée, Miss Adelaide. “Guys and Dolls” is a fable about what happens to gambling men and the women who long to tame them. Set in the colorful world of New York City in the mid 20th century, the romantic and funny “Guys And Dolls” is populated with gangsters and gamblers, missionary dolls and scantily clad showgirls, and is one of the great musical scores in the history of American theatre.
