Darius in Hong Kong, April 2004

🦋 In April 2004 Darius visited Hong Kong and whilst there he took part in a photoshoot for the newspaper South China Post who featured an article with him where he spoke about his time on Pop Idol and his song writing career. ❤️

❤️ You can see the photos and read an excerpt from the newspaper below:

Excerpt from The South China post:

'After I came third in Pop Idol, I was offered a deal with BMG, but I turned it down,' he recalls. 'They tried to convince me that they would make me a big star, but I would have had to do whatever they told me and be a cover artist.'

Everyone told me I should've taken the deal. But I didn't because it's not true to my artistic side. I've been writing songs since I was a child.' He needn't have worried, because U2 producer and Mercury Records director Steve Lillywhite offered him a record deal after listening to his composition Colourblind

'Now I have my creative freedom,' he says. 'I'm allowed to do whatever I want, and choose who I want to work with. That's why I insisted on launching my career as a singer-songwriter. Life is great.'

So, what does he think of the Pop Idol phenomenon? 'I think it's great. It gives young people an opportunity to showcase their abilities as auditions with record companies are usually centralised,' he says. 'And, in the long term, they should create artists with original music. Will and Gareth are still my good friends. We went through this experience together. I think it's important to have good music of all kinds around.'
